When Path of Exile 2 entered early access, the developers anticipated a steady but modest start. Instead, they were overwhelmed by a massive influx of players, far exceeding their preparations. Despite the paywall, which typically limits early access to a smaller, dedicated group, hundreds of thousands of players joined simultaneously. According to the developers, peak concurrent player numbers reached between 800,000 and 900,000, making it the studio’s biggest launch ever.

While this level of interest was encouraging, it also brought significant challenges. The team had to start making adjustments and rebalancing immediately after launch, and these changes were not well-received by all players. Some found that their meticulously crafted characters no longer functioned as intended. In a game like Path of Exile, where players invest dozens of hours into complex builds, this is a major issue.
The early access phase was intended to be a testing period. However, with such high player numbers, it became clear that it couldn’t be treated as a work-in-progress anymore. From the players' perspective, it already felt like a full release.

Patch 0.2, Dawn of the Hunt, introduces a variety of updates focused on endgame content. A new trailer showcases several additions, including system changes and reworked mechanics designed to enhance the later stages of the game. The update brings expanded content and a clearer effort to address long-standing feedback regarding progression and replay value.
The studio also provided a rough timeline for the official 1.0 version, aiming to launch it sometime this year. If they miss this deadline, they plan to release it by March 2026. While not a firm release date, it gives fans something to look forward to without overpromising.
It’s important to note that labeling any version as “final” feels somewhat odd for a game like Path of Exile 2, which is a live-service title. These games are constantly evolving. Nevertheless, a 1.0 release would be a significant milestone for both the studio and the players who have been following the game since its announcement.
The excitement around POE 2 Dawn of the Hunt indicates that the team is paying close attention to community feedback. With a stronger focus on polishing core systems and enhancing the endgame, there’s a real opportunity for Path of Exile 2 to not only match the success of the original but to surpass it. The journey to 1.0 may have been more chaotic than anticipated, but it also demonstrates the immense interest in what the game offers.
How the PoE 2 developers will manage the rollout of this major patch remains to be seen.
